Whether your holiday takes place in the Balearic Islands or on balconies: a tablet remains the perfect companion. Stiftung Warentest has taken 11 models to the chest and reveals which are really worth it.

Netflix on the plane and as a digital book in the park: With the combination of a large display and high mobility in summer, tablets are the ideal device to read, browse the web or binge watch your favorite series on the go. But not everyone convinces to the same extent, as the current test of Stiftung Warentest shows.

Eleven current tablets compared the testers, including nine models between 10 and 11 inches and two particularly handy with 8 inches. In terms of price, the range is large: between 100 and 600 euros are the devices. But the price does not necessarily mean a much higher quality: even the cheapest tablet is among the six “good” in the review.

Expensive test winner

But the first place is occupied by the most expensive tested model: the Apple iPad Air the fourth generation convinced the testers the most. Especially with the sub-item “Functions”, which includes areas such as Internet surfing, video watching or gaming, Apple’s 10.9-inch tablet runs away from the competition mercilessly. The display is also clearly the best in the test. Only the battery performance rated Warentest with 5 hours of surfing, almost 8 hours of video and 2.5 hours of charging time as only mediocre. The strong overall score of “good” (2.0), however, Apple can be paid properly: With 660 Euro beats the tested version with 64GB, Wlan and LTE. If you want to save some money, the model without mobile communications but already from 550 Euro.

Significantly cheaper are the competitors with Android. The second place of models over 10 inches, the Lenovo Tab P11 TB-J606F, is with the overall rating “good” (2,2) hardly behind Apple, costs with a price from 220 Euro but less than half. But you have to make a few minor compromises: In terms of functions, it consistently performs slightly worse than the expensive competitor, for 3D games it is hardly suitable. After all, it can score with a similarly good display and strong battery life: 7.5 hours of surfing and 12.5 hours of video were in it, according to the Warentest.

Even cheaper is the Samsung Galaxy S7. Without LTE, it costs just 170 euros, the tested version with mobile communications is available from 210 euros. However, no peak performance is to be expected here either. The tablet is suitable for surfing and e-mails, videos are already less fun, judges Warentest. And also this device is overwhelmed with demanding games. But the display is good. With the battery, Samsung could have put a spin on it: After 6 hours of surfing or 7 hours of video is over. The overall score “good” (2.5) is nevertheless remarkable in view of the price.

Good Little

While the larger ones also have some dropouts, both small tablets perform well. However, there are significant price differences: The Samsung Galaxy Tab A costs with 450 Euro almost as much as the iPad-despite the significantly smaller display. Technically, however, the 8-inch device is convincing: it is the only tablet to score well in the test in all sub-categories. The running time is 5.5 or 11 hours. This is enough to match the iPad with an overall rating of “good” (2.0).

The cheapest tablet in the review, the Lenovo Tab S8 HD, also knows how to convince-especially with the battery. With 10.5 hours of surfing and a whopping 15 hours of video, it lasts longer than any other device in the test. Also the display is good. Unfortunately, the innards can not quite keep up: surfing or watching video is possible only with mediocre performance, 3D games drop out. The overall rating “good” (2,4) is strong in view of the price.
