From there, he went to Annapolis, Maryland, where he covered city, county and state government at The Capital newspaper. Today, Jeff writes about anything and everything. Along the way, Jeff has covered wildfires, a tropical storm, 9/11 and the Dec. 2 terror attack in San Bernardino. Markus Babbel played for FC Bayern Munich in the late 1990s. By his own admission, Real Madrid had interest in him.

Markus Babbel has confirmed Real Madrid’s previous interest in him. In addition, the former national team player told a funny anecdote.

Babbel, the test match between Mainz 05 and Liverpool FC at News acted as an expert, according to his own statement, just sat in the car to the airport. That was 21 years ago. He was a few hours away from signing for Liverpool at the time.

Real Madrid? For me, only England came into question

In the car, Babbel learned about the rumor that he should be immediately before signing with Real Madrid, the change is as good as fixed. “That was superbly researched,” Babbel said in his role as a TV expert 21 years later, laughing at the report from that time.

But then he relativized: “Real Madrid really wanted me. But for me it was clear: if I change, then only to England. That was always my big dream.”

In the summer of 2000, Babbel decided to move from FC Bayern to FC Liverpool. With the Reds, the future coach won, among other things, the FA Cup and twice the League Cup. Babbel played 73 competitive games for Liverpool. “That was the right decision,” he says today about the change.
