  • Mojang announced plans to revise the game’s terms of service.
  • Making NFT assets based on Minecraft’s official assets will be forbidden.

When Minecraft announced in July 2022 that it would prohibit NFTs on player-run servers, it sent shockwaves across the Web3 community. However, that intended action has not yet taken place, albeit it is still on the horizon about a year later.

In a blog post published last summer, Mojang, a gaming studio owned by Microsoft, announced plans to revise the game’s terms of service to include additional prohibitions on the use of NFTs. Mojang said categorically that “integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow.”

Premium Content for All Customers

However, no notice or update about Minecraft’s rules has been made since then. This week, though, a Microsoft spokesperson told that “the update to the official guidelines is still forthcoming and the policy hasn’t changed.”

Microsoft reported 141 million monthly active gamers across all platforms in 2021, and Mojang, the game’s developer, stated a ban was inevitable after unauthorized and community-driven Web3 applications were created around the game.

Mojang has said categorically that fan-run game servers may not “gate” or otherwise limit player access to content or features by using NFT assets. While Mojang does let server owners set their own prices, all premium content must be made accessible to all customers. Some aspects of NFTs may only be available to a select group of asset holders.

The post also claimed that making NFT assets based on Minecraft’s official assets will be forbidden. The planned step caused problems for Web3 applications developed by outside parties that relied on Minecraft servers.
