Jeff Horseman got into journalism because he liked to write and stunk at math. He grew up in Vermont and he honed his interviewing skills as a supermarket cashier by asking Bernie Sanders “Paper or plastic?” After graduating from Syracuse University in 1999, Jeff began his journalistic odyssey at The Watertown Daily Times in upstate New York, where he impressed then-U.S. Senate candidate Hillary Clinton so much she called him “John” at the end of an interview. From there, he went to Annapolis, Maryland, where he covered city, county and state government at The Capital newspaper. Today, Jeff writes about anything and everything. Along the way, Jeff has covered wildfires, a tropical storm, 9/11 and the Dec. 2 terror attack in San Bernardino. If you have a question or story idea about politics or the inner workings of government, please let Jeff know. He’ll do his best to answer, even if it involves a little math.

Many have problems falling asleep in the evening. A decades-old technology is now being rediscovered by more and more people. It dates back to World War II and was once intended to make it easier for US soldiers to fall asleep. And here’s how: in a comfortable position, first relax your face. Jaw muscles, tongue, mouth. Then proceed gradually with the rest of your body. Relax shoulders and neck, then individually arms and hands. Last, again individually, the thighs, calves and feet. Now imagine one of the following pictures: you are lying in a canoe on a lake under a blue sky. Alternatively, lie in a comfortable hammock in a pitch-dark room. It is crucial to silence the thoughts. If that doesn’t work, they always say to themselves the following mantra: “Don’t think, don’t think.”In military studies, this technique was successful in 96 percent of the participants: after six weeks of practice, they were able to fall asleep within two minutes.
