In the Belarusian capital Minsk, a car drove against a gate of the Russian Embassy. The authorities announced this on Saturday evening. The background was initially unclear.

Investigators released a video from a security camera showing a white car crashing at high speed against the first of two gates opened in the process. Then a man gets out and climbs over the second fence.

The 35-year-old was arrested, the authorities said. He is said to have taken drugs. The exact circumstances should now be investigated.

It was not immediately clear whether the incident was connected to the political situation in the former Soviet Republic. Russia supports Alexander Lukashenko, the internationally largely isolated ruler.

The EU only imposed new economic sanctions on Friday because of the ongoing repression of the opposition. There were mass protests against Lukashenko after the presidential election in August, widely regarded as a fake. The 66-year-old has been ruling for more than a quarter of a century.
