He grew up in Vermont and he honed his interviewing skills as a supermarket cashier by asking Bernie Sanders “Paper or plastic?” After graduating from Syracuse University in 1999, Jeff began his journalistic odyssey at The Watertown Daily Times in upstate New York, where he impressed then-U.S. Senate candidate Hillary Clinton so much she called him “John” at the end of an interview. From there, he went to Annapolis, Maryland, where he covered city, county and state government at The Capital newspaper. Today, Jeff writes about anything and everything. Along the way, Jeff has covered wildfires, a tropical storm, 9/11 and the Dec. 2 terror attack in San Bernardino. If you have a question or story idea about politics or the inner workings of government, please let Jeff know. He’ll do his best to answer, even if it involves a little math.

Germany has decided to: data security is more important than the normal life of millions of people. Because the fear of Surveillance is greater than the fear of the Virus. This must change urgently, says our guest author.

By Frank Schmiechen

The Lockdown is in effect. But terribly plain. Million German are affected. Even though you are not sick. Or infectious. But you have to stay at home, their Jobs are at risk, our economy plunges into the next crisis, artists, and Restaurants go bankrupt. The Corona measures reach deep into our civil liberties.

We are in possession of a much more effective and smarter weapon against the pandemic. But we do not use: The fast and clever analysis of data.

Our data on all

We have decided against the analysis of mobile phone data. Quite aware of that. We put the safety of our data on everything else. Rather, we are willing to take all of the disastrous side effects of the Lockdown in buying. As long as our data is secure. For this purpose, we prefer to write names and addresses on slips of paper in Restaurants, which subsequently land in any drawer. Or we will install an empty App.

The authorities did not know 75 per cent of all cases where the infections have occurred. You are blind. Therefore, the brutal Lockdown needs to be brought out the Hammer to get to the location somehow in the handle. Probably not for the last Time.

With the objective of guided analysis!

In Germany, there is a simple equation: data = Monitoring. Stop it! We need to re-think. Data analysis is a powerful tool for problem solving. Not only in the case of Corona. Also on the subject of climate, health and global nutrition.

In Taiwan, has been passed on for 200 days, not a single infection. South Korea, with its 50 million inhabitants, has more than 250 new infections per day. Modern technology is used for data tracking. Maybe not as we would make. But it is successful. In Taiwan, 350,000 people are in quarantine, and 23 million citizens, thus guaranteeing a normal life.

Target-leading data analysis without Supervision. This is the task for Germany. It’s complicated. Clear. With us, but there are enough clever experts and politicians that can solve this. Will have to solve. Because if we don’t begin to see data as a powerful and smart tool, we also have to rely in the future on silly solutions such as the Lockdown.
