The founder of the security software manufacturer McAfee, John McAfee, has been found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona, according to authorities. The Catalan Ministry of Justice confirmed on Wednesday a corresponding report of the newspaper “El Mundo”. It may have been suicide, it said in a statement.

Hours earlier, Spain’s Supreme Court had given the green light to extradite the 75-year-old to the United States. There, the British-American programmer is accused of tax crimes. McAfee had been arrested at Barcelona Airport in 2020. In an extradition hearing, McAfee had stated that the allegations against him were politically motivated.
