The Hong Kong Police Force’s Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) launched the cutting-edge metaverse platform “CyberDefender”. It is designed to raise public awareness about technology crimes. And to empower individuals to navigate risks within Web3 and the Metaverse.
This sophisticated move demonstrates their progressive mindset towards evading digital crimes. And to enhance their efforts, the Hong Kong Police Force arranged an engaging event called “Exploring the Metaverse”. This event commenced through the CyberDefender metaverse. It was initiated to enlighten the citizens, especially keen teenagers, about the prospects and potential challenges of Web 3.
Insights into the CyberDefender Metaverse Platform
The CyberDefender Metaverse platform itself served as a virtual realm where participants could explore independently. It featured three captivating virtual venues, namely CyberDefender City and the Web3-themed Gallery and Auditorium.
During the event, Chief Inspector Mr. Ip Cheuk-yu warned about the occurrence of various cyber crimes in the metaverse, such as investment fraud and unauthorized access. The guest speakers, Mr. Eric Yeung and Mr. Aska Yeung discussed the challenges and opportunities of Web3 and the Metaverse, including career prospects in the NFT industry and integrating e-sports.
In 2022, Hong Kong witnessed a significant increase in virtual asset-related cases, reaching 2,336 cases and resulting in a staggering loss of $1.7 billion. The trend continued into the first quarter of 2023, with a 44% rise compared to the previous year, amounting to 663 cases and a total loss of $570 million. To combat this issue, the Hong Kong police focus on enhancing digital literacy through their metaverse platform.
The Hong Kong Police’s CyberDefender metaverse platform adds an extra layer of significance as China continues to dominate current crypto headlines. It represents a remarkable endeavor taken by the authorities to proactively prevent virtual crimes.
