The Graphic Novel “The game of the brothers Werner” by two French authors tells of the actions of the Stasi in and around the game between the FRG and the GDR at the world Cup in 1974. Not everything is historically accurate – however, East German spies were at the world Cup actually in use.

For 41 years, from 1949 until 1990, Germany was divided for 28 years by a wall. Everything was in this time the dispute between the diametrically opposing systems: the FRG and the GDR, the West and East, capitalism and socialism betting. This competition was not of course in front of the sports Stop. But just Once it came to a direct clash of the two football national teams: meet in the world Cup 1974 in West Germany.

In the second final round of the Federal Republic and the GDR were drawn back in a group. The Federal Republic of Germany was the reigning European Champions and with players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner and Gerd Müller as the clear favorite in the game. The output is known: The DDR-selection of sensationally won with 1:0. It was, however, much more than a football game – in the Hamburger people’s Park stadium, two of the world met in beliefs on each other. The now-released Graphic Novel “The game of the brothers Werner” by Philippe Collin (author) and Sébastien Goethals (the artist) tells the story of this memorable encounter in the context of the German-German separation.

“The game of the brothers Werner”: the Stasi-agents, sub-national players

The championship game device is almost a side issue – in the foreground, a Stasi agent Thriller is. The brother’s duel on the football field, the story of the brothers Konrad and Andreas Werner, both war orphans, both Stasi and socialism loyal entwined. Konrad is sent to the West, as a supervisor in the national team, sneak in, sow there is discord and to send information in the East. His brother, Andrew, accompanied the East German footballers to the world Cup. Officially as a massage therapist, but in reality, especially as unofficial employees of the Stasi, in order to prevent that the sporting heroes of the Republic in the West to settle.

The Stasi monitored the national team as well as the Fans at the world Cup in the warring West, precisely, is known for a long time. “Action leather” was the name of the Operation in the Ministry for state security. The 1974 world Cup is considered to be one of the largest Stasi operations outside of the GDR. As a spectator, only in socialism rooted citizens were allowed to travel: people with families, houses, more suitable disposition. People, therefore, who had many reasons in the GDR to return, and to stay for a few, in the West. The Fans were determined by the Stasi. Who applied themselves for the trip to the world Cup, was immediately suspicious and was being monitored.

A world Cup game as a Competition of worldviews

As far as Collin and Goethals, two French wanted to keep to the historical facts. The Stasi-brothers, however, are equally invention, such as, at least as far as we know, the infiltration of the later world champion team. And whether or not the athletes are perceived on both sides of the game in the interests of their governments as a contest of ideologies, as in the cartoon shown, was also once asked to go. Between the brothers Werner, however, a crack runs: While Andreas a doubt come on to the System, it turns Konrad, the one in the West, more fully in the service of the Stasi. If need be, even at the cost of his own brother.

The German democratic Republic arbitration, despite the 1:0, ideologically, the victory of Hamburg for the SED, however, was winning the lottery, he showed, however, the alleged Superiority of their own belief. In West Germany, the result will still be waves, the streamlined fast: Two weeks later, the FRG was struck by a 2:1 over the Netherlands in Munich, the champion of the world.
